The Oceanic Free Library was formed in 1920 by Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Meeker to memorialize their son, William Henry Meeker, who died in an aviation training accident during World War I. The Meeker family requested autographed books from notable authors of the time, forming the Meeker book collection.
Today, the Oceanic Free Library continues to be a vital resource and a vibrant community gathering space. We boast a constantly evolving collection of fiction and non-fiction books in addition to offering children's programs; bridge, knitting, and book groups; a community art gallery; and access to free ebooks, audio books, digital magazines, talking books and braille services.
Rumson Parks & Recreation promotes affordable, community-wide recreational, cultural, and educational opportunities for residents of all ages, interests and abilities. We seek to provide a fun, safe environment for our diverse activities, building community through positive social interaction and volunteerism. In addition, Rumson Parks & Recreation strives to develop and maintain high quality parks and recreational facilities for our residents’ enjoyment and well-being.
More specifically, the Department aims to enhance the lives of all of our residents through special events, life-enrichment programs, camps, sports and other enjoyable endeavors.
Interfaith Neighbors prepares and distributes approximately 1,100 meals each weekday to senior citizens across Monmouth County with the help of hundreds of volunteers and staff members. A knock at the door might not seem like a big deal to many of us. But, to a homebound senior citizen, it could signal the arrival of the only person they might see all day, or all week long. It brings health. It brings the nutrition and care that will completely make their day. 22% of all NJ senior citizens are food insecure. One in four seniors lives alone. Meals on Wheels Monmouth County meets nutritional needs, combats social isolation, and provides a daily check-in, so our seniors can continue to live independently and safely in their own homes.
Horizons Student Enrichment Program provides academic, cultural, and recreational opportunities for low–income students in grades K through 8. Each summer teenagers from Rumson and our neighboring communities volunteer their time to this impactful program.
The Arc of Monmouth supports and empowers people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) to maximize their independence, be included in their communities, and to live full and meaningful lives. We believe people with disabilities are defined by their individual strengths, abilities, and dreams – not by their challenges. The Arc of Monmouth serves over 1,600 adults and children with life-changing services such as family supports, residential and independent living options, recreational opportunity, adult day programs, and a college program affiliated with Brookdale Community College.
The Rumson Education Foundation (REF) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1995 whose mission is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of all Deane-Porter and Forrestdale School students. Through community fundraising and an annual collaborative grant process, the REF provides funding for innovative projects, initiatives and equipment that enrich the curriculum and the learning environment within the Rumson School District.
The RFH PTO is dedicated to the health, well-being, and educational success of our students through strong parent and community involvement. The PTO proudly supports the students, faculty, and teachers of Rumson-Fair Haven and every dollar raised goes toward scholarships, teacher appreciation as well as fun and educational events for our students.
L.E.A.D. programs run by the Rumson Police Department educate children and young adults about the harmful effects of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco while allowing students to build relationships and personal contact to know our local police officers in a friendly and safe environment.
The Monmouth County SPCA is a state-of-the-art facility that can house nearly 500 animals waiting for adoption, rehabilitation, or relocation. The MCSPCA offers several community-focused programs including the newly renovated Vogel Veterinary Care Center, animal control services for much of Monmouth County, humane law enforcement, a robust adoption program, dog training, a humane education program, and a pet therapy program. In 2022, over 5,000 animals were cared for. The Monmouth County SPCA is open for walk-in adoptions 7-days per week.
